Borneo Rose

Often referred to as Borneo Roses, these types of tattoos are based on the popular designs among the tribal people of Borneo of stylized flowers.

These type of tattoos, the Borneo roses, are very misinterpreted by a lot of people out there. The actual name is the bunga teruong and is mostly found in the Iban tribe of Borneo.Every part from the design symbolizes one thing, but the overall design is presumed to guard the owner of the tattoo from evil spirits. This design it always has to be done in pairs. Either on the back, shoulders, hands, chest or buttocks these have to flank the human body symmetrically to protect the person on both sides from evil.

The placement of the bunga teruong tattoo on the body does not change it’s meaning whatsoever.
Tribes used a certain part of your body for tattooing, depending on what you were and the role you played in the tribe. Most men would have their tattoos on their shoulders and headhunters would tattoo their hands. The spiral in the design is meant to symbolize the life cycle; this is inspired by the spiral design on a tadpole's belly. As for the number of petals, there is no actual meaning known; different villages of the Iban or Dayak tribe would use a different number of petals in their tattoo design.
